Why I Created "Milestones and Mementos"
Dog headshot

Why "Milestones and Mementos?" The idea was actually inspired by a beloved pet and my dad.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of creating meaningful tribute and memorial pieces for friends, family and clients. Most of these pieces were given by the patron as personal gifts for his/her loved one or friend. This type of work was something that I had occasionally done upon request but did not fall into the regular scope of work my company, JumpSpark Creative Group, LLC., had done as a creative studio and brand coach-sultancy. However, it wasn't until I had created a piece for myself that I considered to venture into this personal creative market.

In late January 2020, our lab, Dozer, had to be put to sleep at almost ten years young after battling a serious autoimmune disease. We had tried everything from traditional and holistic medicine to diet changes in order to heal him. But sadly as a result of his age, his body could no longer fight against the overgrowth of yeast that had externally and internally invaded his body. Dozer was a rather energetic Alpha dog with a strong spirit for a good portion of his life, but then he mellowed out in his later years. We had a special bond, and even as he aged, he still had the spirit of a puppy. It was that puppy spirit that did not want to leave us in his final hours. Putting him to sleep was the hardest thing that my family ever had to do. But, creating his memorial piece had given me a sense of peace and the realization that his spirit lives on. All of the choices that I had made for the piece had truly come from my heart, and this memorial hangs in a place of honor on a wall in our family room. Every time I look at it, Dozer is right there with me. And if you are a pet owner, you can understand what that feels like.

After I had finished Dozer's memorial piece, friends and family loved the idea. My dad pulled me aside and asked how I would feel about doing something this powerful on a wider scale. I thought about it and how the whole process had helped me to personally heal from this heartbreaking loss. And, it is for this reason that I had decided to create "Milestones and Mementos" because I would like to help other people not only heal from loss but also embrace happy moments, people, pets, places and milestones in their lives.
